How Can My Teeth Affect My Pregnancy?

TRANSCRIPT: Sometimes when you’re pregnant your hormones are out of whack and you can get what is called pregnancy gingivitis, meaning the gums are inflamed, the hormones are fluctuating so much that it shows up in the gums and periodontitis or gingivitis can lead to low birth weight for the baby, it can lead to premature delivery of your baby. So, my recommendation for pregnant women is to at least get two cleanings in during your pregnancy, so that may be kind of right in the beginning and then right before you deliver. So even though that’s not maybe six months apart it may be more like four months apart but that’s really going to go a long way in keeping your gums healthy.
