What Is Zirconia?
Zirconia (zirconium dioxide) is a crystal-based ceramic material originally developed for industrial and aerospace applications, including jet engines and space shuttle components. Zirconia crowns are milled from solid blocks of this material using precision computer-guided technology (CAD/CAM), resulting in a restoration that fits with impressive accuracy and is extraordinarily resistant to fracture.
Are Zirconia Crowns Really Unbreakable?
Honest answer: no. Nothing in dentistry, or life, is truly unbreakable. However, zirconia crowns are genuinely among the strongest dental restorations available, and for most patients in most situations, they perform exceptionally well over many years.
Fracture Resistance Is Exceptional
Zirconia is significantly stronger than porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns and all-ceramic crowns. For back teeth that absorb heavy chewing forces, zirconia's durability is difficult to match.
Chipping Is Rare
Unlike traditional porcelain crowns, which can chip or crack especially along the edges, full-contour zirconia crowns have very little porcelain applied, reducing the risk of cosmetic damage.
They Can Crack Under Extreme Force
Severe, repeated trauma, such as from untreated bruxism or an accident, can eventually compromise even a zirconia crown. This is why we always address underlying issues like grinding before or alongside crown placement.
They Don't Corrode or Tarnish
Unlike metal-based crowns, zirconia is completely non-reactive in the oral environment, meaning no dark lines at the gumline and no metallic taste.
Zirconia vs. Other Crown Types
Zirconia Crowns
Best for strength, durability, and patients with heavy bites or grinding habits. Excellent for back teeth and increasingly used for front teeth with high-translucency zirconia options.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns
Have been the standard for decades. Strong but can show a dark gumline over time as gums recede, and the porcelain surface may chip.
All-Ceramic (e-max) Crowns
Offer the most natural appearance and are excellent for front teeth, but not quite as strong as zirconia for heavy-bite situations.
Why Austin Patients Are Choosing Zirconia
At Loveless Dental Facial Aesthetics in Austin, TX, we recommend zirconia crowns for many of our patients because they strike an excellent balance: strong enough to handle real-world chewing forces, attractive enough to look natural, and biocompatible enough for even sensitive patients.
