Researchers at Nova Southeastern University have developed a way to use stem cells to grow teeth in a laboratory setting.
The stem cells are extracted from oral tissues such as teeth and bone marrow. They are grown on scaffolding shaped like the desired tooth. This scaffolding is made from the same material as certain internal sutures and dissolve naturally.
These laboratory-produced teeth have can be grown in the patient’s mouth or implanted fully grown. The researchers have already successfully grown teeth for mice and monkeys. It is still unclear whether the teeth have the same sensations as natural teeth.One day, these teeth may become a viable option for tooth implants.
