A 56-year-old woman from Oregon recently caused quite a buzz in the dentistry world when she woke up from a dental procedure with a new accent. The woman, after receiving dentures, suddenly spoke with an Irish Cockney-sounding accent.
The woman underwent a simple tooth extraction at her local dentist in Oregon in November 2009 due to an extreme case of gingivitis. She was then fitted for dentures, which apparently caused her sudden new accent. Dr. Ted Lowendopf, who did not perform the procedure, was interviewed on the Today Show, where he said that this “Foreign Accent Syndrome” is extremely rare and usually does not occur after a dental procedure.
