Probiotics could improve oral health

A new study out of Spain reveals that probiotics, live microorganisms that are used to treat a variety of infections and intestinal diseases, could greatly improve oral health. The findings will be published in the Archives of Oral Biology Journal.

Researchers at the University of Barcelona found that probiotics helped patients fight against cavity development, lessened the effects gingivitis, and bad breath. A dietitian not involved in the study said that probiotic milk has shown to significantly decrease cavities. Whether the probiotics were administered directly to the problem area or mixed in a formula, the effects are promising.

Probiotic products, such as milk and yogurts, are available at grocery stores and there are also over the counter probiotic pills. If you are interested in setting up an appointment or discussing your dental-care needs with our Austin dental technicians, contact BridgeView Dental by calling 512-347-8299 for more information.
