One of the most important goals of general dentistry is to protect against gum disease. This is a serious condition that can dramatically (and negatively) affect your quality of life, causing significant pain and posing a real threat to your overall health.
That's why it's so important for our Austin-area patients to regularly visit us for examinations and cleanings and to practice sound dental hygiene. This will go a long way toward preventing the development of gum disease.
However, the reality is that gum disease does sometimes occur. And when it does, it must be treated quickly and effectively. At Bridgeview Dental, we can treat gum disease, eliminating this serious threat to your oral health.
How To Address Gum Disease
If you're experiencing persistent pain, tenderness and bleeding in your gums, there's a good chance you have gum disease. And if you do, you need to call us as soon as possible for an examination. We'll diagnose your condition and begin the process of treating your gum disease. There's no time to waste.
The good news, if you have gum disease, is that general dentistry does offer a solution. We can treat your gum disease through scaling and root planing.
Scaling and root planing is essentially an extraordinarily deep and thorough cleaning. With it, we can work under the gum line and remove more plaque and tartar than we can with a traditional cleaning.
We begin by “scaling,” which involves removing tartar and calcified plaque from the area of the teeth that lies beneath the gum line. After scaling is complete, we move forward with “root planing,” which involves smoothing out the root of your tooth. This makes it more difficult for plaque and tartar to form on the surface of the tooth and helps gums shrink back and wrap around the tooth more effectively.
This entire process can be completed in a single visit to our office and is exceptionally effective at treating gum disease. And that's important. If left untreated, gum disease can contribute to a range of serious health problems, including:
- Respiratory disease
- Heart disease
This is a clear demonstration of just how linked oral and general health really are. And it should make clear just how important it is not to delay if you have gum disease.
