Austin Scaling and Root Planing Dentistry
Acute periodontal disease is a form of gum disease that develops because of a buildup of dental plaque. The presence of plaque around the base of the tooth and under the gum line can cause the area to become inflamed and painful to the touch. Sometimes a patient may develop acute periodontal disease that is not responsive to daily care methods such as brushing and flossing. If you have inflamed or sensitive gums, a deep cleaning involving scaling and root planing may help to cleanse the area and reduce swelling.
Failing to address acute periodontal disease can cause greater dental health problems in the future. To learn how our Austin scaling and root planing dentists can help to treat your gum inflammation, contact BridgeView Dental today at 512-347-8299.
Scaling is a non-surgical dental procedure that helps to remove plaque and tartar from the tooth surface. A small dental appliance called a scaler is used to clean the surface of the teeth, including areas beneath the gum line where toothbrushes and floss cannot reach. Ultrasonic cleaners can also be used as a less invasive option for cleaning. To prevent discomfort during the procedure, the patient is given a local anesthetic.
Root Planing Procedure
Once the tooth surface has been scaled and cleaned, a process known as root planing is used to prevent further infection. The root surface is gently filed using a special dental instrument to remove surface tooth material that contains tartar and bacteria. The area is then smoothed so that the gum tissue can heal properly.
If you have inflamed gums or are experiencing increased gum pain, you may have acute periodontal disease. Fortunately, a gum infection can be effectively treated with a scaling and root planing procedure.
