Root Canal Infections
Each tooth has between one and four root canals. These canals are passageways that connect the root of the tooth to the pulp chamber, which is found in the center of the tooth. Infections can start in the pulp and spread to the root, causing inflammation and severe discomfort. Over time the tissue can become diseased and may need to be removed to prevent further infection and pain. In the past, the only way to relieve an infected tooth was to remove the tooth completely. Today, however, root canal therapy is a viable way to treat a diseased tooth and restore its health and function.
Root Canal Therapy Procedure
The process for root canal therapy can require as few as one and up to three treatment sessions, depending on the condition of the tooth. The procedure typically involves:
- Drilling a small hole into the top of the tooth, down to the tooth’s inner pulp chamber
- Removing the infected tissue
- Cleansing the inner chamber and treating it with disinfectant
- Filling the empty chamber and canals with a dental filling
- Capping the tooth with a crown to seal it and prevent future infection
After treatment, the tooth pain will be relieved and the tooth will be restored so that it is once again functional.
Root canal therapy is a safe dental treatment that has been proven to help patients with diseased or infected teeth. To learn more about this procedure and how Austin dentist Lance Loveless, DDS, can help to relieve your tooth pain, contact BridgeView Dental today by calling 512-347-8299.
