Those suffering from diabetes have a higher risk of heart disease and developing certain kinds of cancers if they do not practice good oral health. A new study that will be published in the British Dental Journal claims that inflamed gums can increase the severity of diabetes.

The researchers also found that diabetes that is longstanding and not properly controlled can increase the risks of gum disease. Maintaining oral health is vital for everyone, but diabetics have a higher risk of developing health problems if they do not practice good oral hygiene. Only 13% of the 229 adults in the study knew that swollen gums was linked to their diabetes.
