Nearly 35.7 million Americans are living with gingivitis and a whooping 75% of people will experience the gum disease at some point in their lifetime. Gingivitis is a gum disease caused when inflammation and infection begin to destroy gums and tooth sockets caused by the accumulation of plaque. This disease can cause the gums to become red, irritated, tender, and sometimes cause them to bleed.
Individuals who are more at risk of getting gingivitis are people who smoke, have diabetes and/or leukemia, have a compromised immune system, have defective fillings, or do not practice healthy oral hygiene. To help prevent gingivitis, be sure to brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristled tooth brush, floss daily, and get your teeth professionally cleaned every 3-6 months.
