Millions of U.S. citizens are without access to dental care

Posted on July 14th, 2011 No Comments

A recent report was issued by the Institute of Medicine that said that millions of people in the United States do not receive adequate dental care, if any at all.

The report stated that over 30 million people do not live in areas where dentists are readily available. This may be because they live in rural areas or areas stricken with poverty. The report also stated that over 4 million children do not go to the dentists because their parents cannot afford it.

The report suggested that dental students should be recruited from areas in which not many dentists are present, such as rural or low-income areas, so that the number of dentists serving in those communities would increase.

Not receiving dental care can result in cavities, gum disease, heart disease, and even respiratory problems and diabetes. If you or someone you love needs a dental check-up, please contact the Austin dentists of BridgeView Dental at 512-347-8299 to schedule an appointment.
