Study finds smokers require root canals more often than non-smokers

Posted on June 15th, 2011 No Comments

The American Dental Association recently conducted a study which found that male and female smokers require root canals more often than non-smokers.

Root canal therapy is required when pulp that connects root canals to the root of the tooth becomes diseased or injured and dies, causing teeth to fall out in extreme cases. Because smokers often suffer from dry mouth, more bacteria grows in the mouths of smokers. This bacteria can cause the pulp to become diseased and the tooth to be infected.

Root canal therapy is an easy alternative to losing teeth and wearing dentures. In many cases, patients who undergo root canal therapy leave with healthy teeth after only one or two sessions.
